There Actually Is Some Reality In Reality TV. Who Knew?
I watched the Bachelor for the first time in my life on Monday. I’m currently torn between horror because I will never get that hour and a half of my life back (it was a two hour special…didn’t make it through the whole thing) and surprise at how many life lessons could be learned from those sad, sad circus freaks, I mean contestants, I mean ladies lookin’ for love. There is NO such thing as love at first sight: An actual quote from the show: “I could just imagine telling my grandchildren, this is how me and grandpa met.†Amazing. Amazingly wrong that is. There is no such thing as love at first sight, not in your personal life, and not in the job hunt. Maybe Company A has done something recently that completely rocked your life. Awesome, have a crush, but do your research. Google them, ask around, get some background before you start naming your bonuses. L’eau de desperation is not sexy: My favorite chick (and by favorite I mean, “It was like a 10 car pile up. I wanted to wretch, but I couldn’t look away.â€) was the one who said in her interview “I just want to start a family. Let’s be honest, my eggs are rotting here!†Honey, are you serious? Needless to say, she was the first to get cut. The same goes for your job hunt. The repo man may be on the way for your Jetta, but when you walk into your interview, be cool, calm, and collected. We all like to say we’re too old to play games, but you’ve got to sometimes. Aggressive is great, but desperate is down right unattractive. Call once a week and state you enjoyed your time there, and would like to speak further about the opportunity. Let them know you want them, but don’t be a complete psycho about it. Show them you are confident and happy, and their job would be an added benefit to your life, and they’ll love you all the more. These two tidbits are just a snippet of what I learned from the people on The Bachelor: Paris. I could give you more, but I’m going to start to cry again over my lost 90 minutes…sigh.
