Have Fun Storming The Castle.

Once upon a time in the land of Talentville there was an Art Director named Abe. Abe was admired across the village as a young reliable man of his trade. Among the village people, Abe had many valuable references. Abe always had a fresh portfolio on hand in case his dream opportunity came along. Abe valued his relationships and his work.

Across the river was an Art Director named Igor. Igor had the biggest ego in the land. He was a great talent but had been seduced by the pedigree, large salary and amazing client list of his current shop. This man had lost touch with his quality of life and was blinded by the lust of even more diamonds and pearls.

One night a gigantic dragon swept through the land and breathed fire on Talentville and the surrounding villages. The entire territory was demolished except for one tiny castle left untouched by the dragon’s wrath. Inside this castle was a miniature shop called Frog Prince. Only a few villagers knew of this shop. Frog Prince was winning new clients and was forced into a hiring frenzy. Among some of the talent interviewing were Abe and Igor. Igor did not take Frog Prince seriously. He was overconfident and wanted to wait for a better opportunity in another land. Abe took the job.

Frog Prince eventually grew to new heights. Abe grew with them. Abe established a stable resume and was on the up and up. Igor’s better opportunity never came along. He was forced into a life of turmoil and debauchery. He was forced to be the town barn wench.

Moral of the story: When storming the castle, be humble. Weigh out your options. Think of the future. Do not wait for the opportunity that may never exist. More than often a smaller shop can be the frog that turned into a prince. Remember what you love about this business.

I think this business naturally causes us to always look ahead for the next “Big Idea.”

Which is good. And bad, as we see in Igor’s case. But this simple story illustrates a great point. Good work and confidence will help good things happen to good people, in time. A stright line may not always be the shortest distance between two points.

First I would like to say The Princess Bride is one of my all time favorites.

Last I would like to say thanks. I am thinking about taking a job at a B to B shop. I really don’t want to, but it could be good. Maybe it’s the tiny little castle shop that only works with other castles. We could grow and do some consumer stuff. A few blacksmith shoppes, brothals, taverns. Then when any competitors come about, we bring the dragon back.(He works for us now) Wow! I feel better already. Thanks sweety!
