Your word is all you have!

“I am very interested in this position and would love for you to submit my resume” is a line I am sure all recruiters have heard from candidates. As a recruiter, you are thrilled because this may be the candidate you need in order to make that placement but you notice that the resume you have is 1-2 years old. So you ask, “Can I get an updated copy of your resume?”, the candidate says sure and you expect to see the resume in your inbox the next day or in 48 hours, for the latest….You wait and wait..days go by..then weeks and still no resume. You are beginning to think that the candidate is no longer interested but get a phone call in 3-4 weeks from the candidate saying, “I have been SOOOOO busy traveling and meeting with clients at my current job that I have not been able to update my resume and I will get it to you by tomorrow morning for sure.” However, by this time you have already placed someone in the position. I am sure this has happened to several recruiters on several occasions. I know it has happened to me more then once.

Candidates, it is important that once a recruiter calls you about a position and you are interested, you get your résumé over ASAP (within 48 hours). Understand that you are not the only person this recruiter may be working with and the possibility of this position being open in 3-4 weeks is slim to none. It may even be wise for you to keep an updated resume handy just in case your dream job comes a knocking…

This happens all the time and it’s such a red flag. How am I supposed to represent someone if their word means nothing? You can have the best book in the world, but chances are if your follow up skills are non-existent, then I really don’t have time to waste.
