Pros and Cons of Freelance Work
As a Creative Recruiter, I spend hours on the phone discussing the pros and cons of both freelance work, and working as a fulltime staff member at an agency. What’s so great about freelance? Freedom, of course. Working from home, controlling your hourly rate, and making your own schedule are all great attributes of being a freelance creative consultant. The benefits of freelancing are great, but there are drawbacks too. Freelance creatives must provide their own benefits and insurance, and also must chase down their own business, which is sometime slim pickens, and not the most exciting work. Agency experience is very important in a fullfilling creative career. The more agency experience listed on a resume, the greater the value. A word to the wise: freelance is a great source of freedom and cash flow, but don’t get too comfy. Be sure to consider the joy of working as a collaborative part of a creative team at an agency, and reap all the benefits, in addition to freelancing.
