Where Did You Go…

Are you ready for a SERIOUS 90’s throwback? Are you sure? Okay, here goes. Do you remember that fantastic, not-so-talented Euro-pop duo called La Bouche? They sang all of those phenomenal tunes that you couldn’t get out of your head like “Sweet Dreams” and “Be My Lover.” Well, they recently came out with a greatest hits album, which probably sold about 6 copies (3 were to me). In any event, I figured that I would pay homage to La Bouche by basing this blog entry on one of their best– “Where Do You Go?”

You’re probably wondering where the heck I’m going with this. Well, the song’s lyrics tell a heartbreaking tale of a great relationship gone awry because of a lack of communication. I can’t even count how many times a similar story has been told about the relationship between recruiters and candidates, sans the romantic undertones.

There’s usually no rhyme or reason as to how or why it happens. Similar to an actual relationship, recruiters and candidates tend to start off in the “honeymoon stage.” This is the time when everything is going great. We’re talking about opportunities, setting up interviews left and right… things couldn’t be better. Then, all of a sudden, you stop returning my phone calls. You don’t respond to emails for days on end. You’re distant on the phone. I think to myself, “is there another recruiter in his life? What happened to the days when he would pick up my calls on the first ring and be excited to talk to me?”

All joking aside, we realize that you’re busy. We know that you have a real job besides just talking to us. We understand that you have a boss and/or a wife breathing down your neck. We get the fact that you can’t always pick up the phone. What you don’t often realize is how quickly a great opportunity can vanish because an email or phone call isn’t returned in a timely manner. Agencies are only willing to wait so long to hear back from us regarding a candidate before they move on. We can only do the same.

Trust me, we don’t want to call/email you repeatedly in order to get a resume, schedule an interview or discuss an offer. We are only trying to do what’s best for you. No matter what your current situation is, we just want to be kept in the loop. All I ask is that you let us know if you’re sick, trying to meet a major deadline or interviewing elsewhere. I swear that it will be beneficial to you in the end. I also promise to not get mad and throw your boxers out the window like a real girlfriend might.

So, in the immortal words of La Bouche…

Where do you go, my lovely?
Where do you go?
I want to know, my lovely
I want to know (x4)
Where do you, where do you go? (x2)

My imagination drives me insane
Tell me what’s the game you play
Never in my life did I feel such a pain
You don’t need to hide away
