2 Good Reasons Not To Lie

Lying is consdered morally and ethically wrong by most people. If you aren’t one of those people, there are other tangible reasons not to lie on your resume. It will come back to to haunt you…

I have seen this go wrong - attenging a university or specialized school is not the same thing as graduating.

If you did not graduate, do not refer to your degree on your resume.

One candidate decided to forgo the details regarding his education and put that he held a degree.

After 3 interviews, the agency unexpectedly did a background check, and discovered that he merely attended classes.

No degree. No job for him - mostly based on his dishonesty. Now not only is he out of a job, but he’s tarnished a significant portion of his network. It’s also a bad idea to create titles and skill sets that you did not ever have.

One candidate created fictional titles for himself, and guess who he came face to face with on his very first interview…? His former boss. Busted.

While it’s okay to put the very best version of yourself out on your CV, fairytales and deception are simply not wise. For more information on what can go wrong - read here.

I read an article in the business section yesterday that stated that a recent survey had found that 40 percent of resumes sent to a large multinational contained outright lies and exaggerations regarding qualifications and experience. This is why there has been a steep increase in the number of pre-employment background checks conducted by employers.
Another good reason to stick to the facts!

So, do I take out my education all together? I did not graduate, stupidly as I was 30 hours short of graduation, because I started working in my field. I was working in TV production at the time. Do I state that I attended and did not graduate? I believe that my education is an important part of who I am. I have been working as a creative for over 4 years, but am freelancing right now and am hoping to work full time at an agency again. ARggh!!! This is frustrating. Help!
