Oh, You’re Looking to Cross into the Dark Side?
The excitement builds as I come across the perfect candidate. The ideal amount of experience. Worked on key accounts that will have the agency drooling. Willing to relocate anywhere in the country. Not money motivated. An advertising recruiter’s wet dream. Well almost.
I seem to be running into this a lot lately. I get excited when I finally get them on the phone after a few days of playing phone tag. I get them talking to me before I pitch the agency I have in mind for them and these dreaded words spew from their mouth. “I’m currently looking for something on the client side!” No, not the dark side! I say this because when these words are mutter a dark cloud begins to form above my desk and like a sad puppy dog I have to explain that I don’t have anything on the client side at this time.
Without screaming at this awesome candidate I start to try and relate to him. I understand that the advertising industry can be very rickety sometimes. Ok who am I kidding; you never know when that slap in the face is coming. No matter where you are on the ladder. The dark side, excuse me, client side has a reputation of being more stable in a scary economy. So I do give you credit for wanting something more stable. But perhaps you could indicate this somewhere in your resume.
The point of your objective is to let whoever looks at your resume know what you are looking for in a career. How is an employer supposed to know that you are looking for something on client side if all your objective says is “To obtain a position that will allow me to excel in Media.” My suggestion; be more specific. Be strait forward with your resume. You will weed out all the employers and recruiters trying to submit you for an agency position, and only get inquires regarding client side.
Here is a blog from a totally different perspective. So may the force be with you during your search in the dark side.
