“You ought a know”

What and who am I sick of today? People who continue to think that their freelance rate should add up to the same amount as a base salary. That’s great that you are making fifty even sixty dollars an hour as a freelancer. You should be making that much if you have to pay your own medical benefits, begrudgingly allow the government to take more of your money for taxes, AND having to deal with the paperwork/collections of your little one-man show. However, if you decide that you want more stability and start applying for a full-time, agency position then…

The Waiting

I have come to understand what Tom Petty meant when he said, “The Waiting is the hardest part”tom

For several reasons. I’m a recruiter waiting, waiting, waiting on my clients to make offers, make comments, even to call me back. I have candidates that have been interviewing for 4 MONTHS. Seriously. However, in the midst of all this – indigestion, shortness of breath, anxiety-ridden thinking, I have realized that I can only do so much to control the situation. More importantly, I understand my place in this process – I am trying to learn the art of being assertive without being…

Where Did You Go…

Are you ready for a SERIOUS 90’s throwback? Are you sure? Okay, here goes. Do you remember that fantastic, not-so-talented Euro-pop duo called La Bouche? They sang all of those phenomenal tunes that you couldn’t get out of your head like “Sweet Dreams” and “Be My Lover.” Well, they recently came out with a greatest hits album, which probably sold about 6 copies (3 were to me). In any event, I figured that I would pay homage to La Bouche by basing this blog entry on one of their best– “Where Do You Go?”

You’re probably wondering where the heck I’m…

An Open Letter…

Dear Mr. I said I was willing to relo but now that I have an offer I’m having second thoughts,

First, thanks so much for taking hours out of your day and mine to discuss the awesome job opening we have. I was excited that you were so excited. You gave me hope and then took it away like a thief in the night.
I understand that relocation is a big deal and that your significant other has a say in it. However, it is you that seems to not grasp that concept. Was she mad when she found out you were actually on…

Get ‘Er Done!

“I’ll clean my house tomorrow.” “I’ll start working out next week.” “I’ll pay off that pesky Bloomingdale’s credit card bill next month.” False deadlines. We all set them for ourselves - we’re only human. The one that we recruiters tend to hear (and loathe) the most is something along the lines of “I’m going to start looking for a new job next ________.” (Fill in the bank with false deadline).

I’ll set the stage for you…

The conversation typically starts out with me calling you about an incredible opportunity in a location where you’ve only dreamed about living. It involves a shiny new title…

Keeping it Real

Sometimes I call candidates to sell them on a certain position and they are quite content to stay just where they are. “No thank you. I’m happy here…”

This is usually the case when they have been at their current position for less than 1 year.

It’s the honeymoon stage of the relationship. Flaws, transgressions, wrongdoings are all at a minimum or are not visible to the creative. They are challenged, happy and full of life.

Other times I hear a desperate voice on the other end of the phone. They are gainfully employed and making money but they are ready to jump ship.

Why?…

Here’s to Making the New Year Bright!

While everyone makes their holiday wish lists and checks them twice, here’s a unique version of the infamous Christmas carol “The Twelve Days of Christmas” that could make the New Year bright. Enjoy!

A proud mother of five and founder of www.hireornohire.com creatively revised the legendary carol known for listing 12 curious gifts to an “Online Recruiting’ parody for Employers, Recruiters and Hiring Managers…

On the 1st day of Christmas my true love gave to me, a Hire in a pear tree.

On the 2nd day of Christmas my true love gave to me, 2 Job Offers and a Hire in a pear tree.

On the 3rd…

Your Website Sucks

As a Creative Recruiter I spend my days browsing through hundreds of names, resumes, and portfolios looking for that perfect candidate. I also spend my days rummaging through countless agency blogs, industry sites, and any other source, site, link, or otherwise to keep myself up-to-date on what’s happening in order to better serve my clients and candidates. I love the industry, I love the creative, and I love my job. Why then, am I so piss fire mad?

I’m mad because I come across untold numbers of people everyday whose websites suck, yours included. Worse yet, you would be surprised at how…
