Scheduling…and Re-Scheduling…

Role play here with me for a minute. Let’s pretend that I’m your doctor. You called me and said you have a sore throat and a fever. Naturally, I schedule you to come in at my first possible opening – lets pretend it’s sometime on Friday. Well, I would imagine you’d be surprised if I called you on Friday, two hours before your aforementioned appointment, and said I had to reschedule because I have a more important appointment. But, you think, ok fine. You reschedule for my next open appointment on Monday. So on Monday you’re practically bleeding from the…

Research is Good, Very Good

So the Democratic National convention kicked off this week in Denver. The first day alone was very eventful when it came to the press surrounding the conference. With the lovely speech that Michelle Obama did and her two little girls joining her on stage to say hello to their father via satellite. Followed by the speech from Vice President Candidate Sen. Joe Biden. Nothing compares to the flooding of the Fox News skybox at the Pepsi Center. I’m telling you this was planned by some rookie out to prove a point. But it didn’t stop there! Outside the DNC there…

So You Think You Don’t Need the Practice. Really?

I do it every year. I wait and wait for that one glorious Sunday night. Some years I’ll invite some friends over and make swanky pink cocktails, and other years I’ll opt to snuggle up in my jammies and pop some popcorn. Either way, I count down the minutes until…you guessed it…the Academy Awards (you can sub in the MTV Video Awards or the Soapies…whatever floats your boat)! I watch in wonderment as people like Brad, Angelina, Meryl and the occasional Pauly Shore walk down the red carpet, wave at their adoring fans and try not to squint when 8,000…

The Waiting

I have come to understand what Tom Petty meant when he said, “The Waiting is the hardest part”tom

For several reasons. I’m a recruiter waiting, waiting, waiting on my clients to make offers, make comments, even to call me back. I have candidates that have been interviewing for 4 MONTHS. Seriously. However, in the midst of all this – indigestion, shortness of breath, anxiety-ridden thinking, I have realized that I can only do so much to control the situation. More importantly, I understand my place in this process – I am trying to learn the art of being assertive without being…

Why on Earth…

This blog is dedicated to all of those things people do that beg the question, Why on earth would you do that?

Why on earth would you agree to schedule a phone interview and then not pick up the phone when the Creative Director calls you, twice? I understand that you are probably busy being unemployed as you are, possibly going for the world record on that new video game you bought. However, the creative world is a small one and if you keep this up the only person that will want to recruit for you is someone who is trying to get…

An Open Letter…

Dear Mr. I said I was willing to relo but now that I have an offer I’m having second thoughts,

First, thanks so much for taking hours out of your day and mine to discuss the awesome job opening we have. I was excited that you were so excited. You gave me hope and then took it away like a thief in the night.
I understand that relocation is a big deal and that your significant other has a say in it. However, it is you that seems to not grasp that concept. Was she mad when she found out you were actually on…

Being self-aware… the career years

I know everyone probably most frequently contemplated “self-awareness” in a 9:00 am Philosophy class in college or, if you were a deep adolescent, in your buddy’s parent’s basement. However, for those of you who weren’t fully awake for the lesson, “self-awareness” is still important in your career years. I understand that it holds some clout to win a national award or work in some capacity for a big-name agency but that doesn’t mean you hold the key to all that is good and right in the advertising world. It’s great to be enthusiastic and excited about a great piece of work you…

What to Know About Every Candidate You Interview

InformationDay-in and day-out we are constantly interviewing candidates and gaging their fit for new opportunities while trying to fully understand their qualifications and what they want in a new position. But that’s not all we need to know. In a recent article on ere.net, seasoned recruiter, consultant and writer, Howard Adamsky, discloses ten key areas that every recruiter should fully investigate before presenting a candidate to a hiring manager. In recruiting, more is better… the more information you have to offer the hiring manager, the more value you add to the overall hiring process. Enjoy!

Experience or Charisma?

When considering presidential candidates, so often we are choosing between experience and charisma (or at least the latest spin on these 2 attributes)…

Which is more important?

The same question is considered when an employer is tying to decide between two candidates. As a recruiter I often come to the same crossroads.

When I am recruiting for more technically advanced job opportunities, (IE Information Architects) I am often faced with a dilemma:

It’s very rare that someone whose primary expertise involves coding will also have the “sell yourself” connection to hiring managers that’s needed. I realize this is not always the case, but I have…

Sometimes the Shoe Just Doesn’t Fit…

…and you have to know when to part ways and leave it on shelf. This is definitely easier said than done, but on the flip-side, a lot of time and energy can be saved along with keeping your candidate from wearing out their welcome. When you have a great candidate and your client recognizes that they are truly dealing with the industry’s best (like a pair of Manolo’s), it is easy to get hung up on trying to find the right fit.

Trying on Shoes

Before you know it, your candidate is on their 4th interview for another newly created opportunity with the same agency. It…
