Scheduling…and Re-Scheduling…
Role play here with me for a minute. Let’s pretend that I’m your doctor. You called me and said you have a sore throat and a fever. Naturally, I schedule you to come in at my first possible opening – lets pretend it’s sometime on Friday. Well, I would imagine you’d be surprised if I called you on Friday, two hours before your aforementioned appointment, and said I had to reschedule because I have a more important appointment. But, you think, ok fine. You reschedule for my next open appointment on Monday. So on Monday you’re practically bleeding from the…

Patience takes practice.
It’s got to be the worst part about applying for jobs and sending your resume to different employers. The great thing about having a recruiter is that you are more likely to hear back about your resume then if you had sent it in blindly. Your recruiter hypes up this position and tells you all about the agency; you’ve already researched the hell out of the company and the location so you already know every hot spot within 10 miles. But you still have to wait. I know it sucks; even I get impatient waiting for the feedback from an…Posted: September 3rd, 2008 under Archived Posts, Do's and Don'ts, Job Hunt, Miscellaneous.

Research is Good, Very Good
So the Democratic National convention kicked off this week in Denver. The first day alone was very eventful when it came to the press surrounding the conference. With the lovely speech that Michelle Obama did and her two little girls joining her on stage to say hello to their father via satellite. Followed by the speech from Vice President Candidate Sen. Joe Biden. Nothing compares to the flooding of the Fox News skybox at the Pepsi Center. I’m telling you this was planned by some rookie out to prove a point. But it didn’t stop there! Outside the DNC there…

So You Think You Don’t Need the Practice. Really?
I do it every year. I wait and wait for that one glorious Sunday night. Some years I’ll invite some friends over and make swanky pink cocktails, and other years I’ll opt to snuggle up in my jammies and pop some popcorn. Either way, I count down the minutes until…you guessed it…the Academy Awards (you can sub in the MTV Video Awards or the Soapies…whatever floats your boat)! I watch in wonderment as people like Brad, Angelina, Meryl and the occasional Pauly Shore walk down the red carpet, wave at their adoring fans and try not to squint when 8,000…

“You ought a know”
What and who am I sick of today? People who continue to think that their freelance rate should add up to the same amount as a base salary. That’s great that you are making fifty even sixty dollars an hour as a freelancer. You should be making that much if you have to pay your own medical benefits, begrudgingly allow the government to take more of your money for taxes, AND having to deal with the paperwork/collections of your little one-man show. However, if you decide that you want more stability and start applying for a full-time, agency position then…

The Waiting
I have come to understand what Tom Petty meant when he said, “The Waiting is the hardest part”
For several reasons. I’m a recruiter waiting, waiting, waiting on my clients to make offers, make comments, even to call me back. I have candidates that have been interviewing for 4 MONTHS. Seriously. However, in the midst of all this – indigestion, shortness of breath, anxiety-ridden thinking, I have realized that I can only do so much to control the situation. More importantly, I understand my place in this process – I am trying to learn the art of being assertive without being…

Massaging the Message from the Medium
Ok, so perhaps a bit of a grandiose title for this particular blog but it almost relates to what I want to talk about. What I want to talk about is advertising specialties. What type of agency do you work for and what type of agency to you want to work with? I’ve talked in the past about resumes and websites and making sure that you represent yourself as best as you can but now I’d like to touch on an additional factor, your specialty.
This particular subject doesn’t particularly relate to more junior candidates that are still looking to get their ‘feet wet’ in the…

Why I’m Thankful
1. Candidates who tell me what I need to know to help them.
2. Human Resource Directors who are honest and forthcoming.
3. People who know what they’re good at and are willing to learn more about what they aren’t good at.
4. Anyone with a sense of humor and some flexibility.
5. Email.
6. The fact that I don’t own a Blackberry.
7. The keg at work.
8. Candidates who are even better than I give them credit for.
9. Knowing that ending a sentence in a preposition is poor grammar.
10. Writing for a blog where no one cares about #9.
