Where Did You Go…
Are you ready for a SERIOUS 90’s throwback? Are you sure? Okay, here goes. Do you remember that fantastic, not-so-talented Euro-pop duo called La Bouche? They sang all of those phenomenal tunes that you couldn’t get out of your head like “Sweet Dreams†and “Be My Lover.†Well, they recently came out with a greatest hits album, which probably sold about 6 copies (3 were to me). In any event, I figured that I would pay homage to La Bouche by basing this blog entry on one of their best– “Where Do You Go?â€

You’re probably wondering where the heck I’m…

yay me makey new friendseys
I got a new client the other day. Typically, as a Sr Recruiter, you should get at least one new client every two weeks. I hope you can make the mental leap to ask “why, then, is getting a new client a big deal?†Well, inquiring spirit, let me explain why this one is a big deal and it is making me a giddy little disco diva.
A candidate I had been talking to for some time moved to this inoffensive middle American city when he got a new gig – unfortunately I did not provide him with that particular job. Anyway, it…

The Waiting Game
My mother always told me that patience is a virtue. It’s funny if you know her, because she is probably one of the most impatient people you’ll ever meet. I might be a close second. I want it yesterday - always.
Unfortunately, there’s a lot of waiting with a job search. They look at your resume. We wait. They want to interview you. Next week. Then we wait until everyone chimes in on what they thought of you. They want to meet you and they fly you out. Then we wait some more. They make the offer and then it’s your turn.
You…

30 Days of Night and Over-inflated Expectations. . . and YOU
I don’t know if I have impressed upon any of you about how much of a movie geek I am. Well, ummm, I am a big movie geek. That being said I had to go see the new Vamp-tastic flick this weekend 30 Days of Night from the celebrated Graphic Novel and helmed by the director of the amazing and alarming Hard Candy.
To give you some perspective, I have been watching the online prequel series, researching the production updates, and watching all of the new trailers – officially making me a Tool by any standard. I had no illusions that this was going to change…

In the Heart of the City Pt. 2

Well its been a week and the Cowboys have been eliminated from the playoffs and I think Tony Romo, the NFC’s Pro Bowl new "Golden Boy", may still be crying himself to sleep every night. But to get back to what we were discussing, What does cause a cities ad market to boom and bust? There are several factors here. Stating the obvious, The first factor is the number of agencies a city has. The reigning Mecca for Advertising is New York City. Nothing has changed there and I don’t really see a huge movement happening anytime soon. Chicago will always have the major CPG…

Holiday Season
Although it is tempting to put everything off until the new year, December is actually a very active recruiting month. A common misconception is that agency’s HR departments kind of turn it in going into the home stretch of the calender year. A lot of people tend to get lazy about looking for jobs and sending out resumes because they figure it will all crank back up in January. This is FAR from the truth. Many of the bigger agencies have hiring budgets set out for the year. If January rolls around and those budgets are not used up,…

The Freeze
Theres about a million and one things that can slow down a hiring process. We get searches all the time that we will get into maintenance, get several candidates interviewing, and then BAM… "Yeah Mike we’re actually going to put this position on hold until Quarter 3". This happens everyday. Trust me, I hate it more then the potential candidates I get to call all and inform that I’ll be in touch in September if they are still in the market. Everybody wants a bump free ride from resume submission to hire but the reality of the situation is…

Your word is all you have!
“I am very interested in this position and would love for you to submit my resume†is a line I am sure all recruiters have heard from candidates. As a recruiter, you are thrilled because this may be the candidate you need in order to make that placement but you notice that the resume you have is 1-2 years old. So you ask, “Can I get an updated copy of your resume?â€, the candidate says sure and you expect to see the resume in your inbox the next day or in 48 hours, for the latest….You wait and wait..days go…

Getting the Offer.
Sometimes, the most painstakingly long portion of the job interview process (especially for recruiters) can be getting the offer approved. This part is tough for obvious reasons. You have already knocked out the interview so why can’t it just be BAM here is your offer!! Well I wish it was so easy. But agencies, and the majority of the time this happens with the larger ones, have all kinds of approvals and loops to job through before an offer materializes. I have one client who is waiting on approval for an offer for a candidate that went into interview in…

The Hiring Timetable.
“What was that recruiters name?? It’s been at least a good three weeks… Was it Mike? No, it was Eric. Was it even a guy? Maybe it was a Jen. Who knows??†Yes it can be a along time between recruiter calls. Sometimes it can be so long that you may forget your recruiter’s name. Don’t worry; we won’t get offended easily at Talent Zoo. Unfortunately for everyone involved, the hiring process does have one key ingredient that most agencies pour on in ample amounts. That key ingredient is the time it takes to make a hire. I just got…
