Fluff-Free Resumes Make Me Smile

FluffWas there a seminar or personal dev class that I missed somewhere along the lines? Apparently most job seekers are under the impression that being as vague as possible on their resumes is benefiting them. Perhaps their (your?) line of thinking goes something like this: “If I use general terms and be as broad as possible then the recruiter/hiring manager is going to think that I have whatever it is they’re looking for!”

Actually, quite theopposite is true. Trust me; I look at a lot of resumes and I’ve been in the recruiting game for going on six years now.…

How to Have a Great Relationship with Your Recruiter

If there’s one thing that I’ve learned in my years of recruiting it’s that the really good candidates are few and far between. Most of you are pleasant to work with, some of you are nightmares and can boarder on being a stalker, and every so often I have the real pleasure of working with someone who is fantastic. Just such a candidate came into my recruiting world the other week and this post is a tribute to him, and those like him that I’ve worked with through the years.

“Put down the Elmer’s…this isn’t fifth grade.”

I kid you not when I tell you readers out there that I recently received a resume where the description/objective was displayed in the form of an acronym derived out of the candidate’s first name. Are you serious?!? This is not your fifth grade art project where you are making a macaroni Mother’s Day card. Hang that sh*t on your fridge if you’re so proud of the fact that you can describe yourself utilizing YOUR name but definitely don’t send it to me or a place of employment. The ironic thing about said acronym is that one of the letters…

The little details count

Now I’m not trying to stay on a politics kick but sometimes there are just interesting stories that revolve around it. Especially since it’s an election year all eyes are on the candidates and their staff. It’s a historical year for politics. Not only is there a black man running for president but there is a woman running for vice president. It’s great. Anyways, you have to wonder what runs through Obama’s head when anyone from his campaign team starts blowing up his phone. I’m sure it happened when Ludacris wrote his support Obama song, Obama is here. But just…

So You Think You Don’t Need the Practice. Really?

I do it every year. I wait and wait for that one glorious Sunday night. Some years I’ll invite some friends over and make swanky pink cocktails, and other years I’ll opt to snuggle up in my jammies and pop some popcorn. Either way, I count down the minutes until…you guessed it…the Academy Awards (you can sub in the MTV Video Awards or the Soapies…whatever floats your boat)! I watch in wonderment as people like Brad, Angelina, Meryl and the occasional Pauly Shore walk down the red carpet, wave at their adoring fans and try not to squint when 8,000…
